Modeling Democratic Erosion: Implications for Researchers and Practitioners

Fri, August 30, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hilton, Columbia 12

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Session Description

This roundtable will bring together several academic-practitioner research partners to discuss how practitioner need for new tools to model and measure closing space have stimulated new research, and how that research in turn will be used to inform the programs implemented by international democracy promotion organizations. The projects we will discuss include a typology and forecasting tool, predictive modeling of closing space using V-Dem data, the Democratic Erosion data set, and a machine learning/text scraping project to forecast closing civic space using input from civic organizations and providing data to them in return. We will use an interactive “talk show” format where the chair poses questions to particular members of the panel and builds on audience questions during the panel.
