Doing Gender, Rutgers Women and Politics, and the Impact of Dr. Susan J. Carroll

In 1986, Rutgers University, New Brunswick established the Ph.D. major of Women and Politics, the first program that has ever done so- and the only one since. Over the past 33 years, the Rutgers Political Science doctoral program has graduated over 35 Women and Politics majors and 30 Women and Politics minors. Though numerous others have substantially contributed, initiating the Women and Politics graduate program and maintaining its continued success has been led by Dr. Susan J. Carroll. Dr. Carroll has orchestrated a rigorous academic program with an emphasis on two defining features: (1) the relationship between theory and practice and (2) the link between Political Science and Women’s and Gender Studies disciplines (Carroll 2013). In addition to the Rutgers Women and Politics academic program, Carroll has published numerous women and politics articles and books, helped develop the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) program and the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), and strengthened the Women and Politics Research subfield in the discipline of Political Science more broadly. Carroll is a pioneer who has shaped Political Science through her gender and politics work. Her research, teaching, service, and mentorship have left a lasting impact on the scholarship and practice of gender politics. The panelists, all alum of the Rutgers Women and Politics academic program, will discuss Dr. Carroll's intellectual contributions to the discipline as well as her influence on their own development as scholars and professionals. The panelists will also share their perceptions of Dr. Carroll's impact on the field of gender and politics and provide an opportunity for Dr. Carroll (if she would like) to reflect on her career and her students' comments.
