Sat, August 31, 4:00 to 5:30pm, Hilton, Columbia 11

Session Submission Type: Full Paper Panel

Session Description

This panel brings together new research on campaigns and elections, to be compared with research on governing political elites, on the the uses and influence of social media to achieve policy and electoral goals.

Matt Hindman, George Washington Univeristy, is the discussant and chair.

Holli A. Semetko, Emory University, is the panel organizer.

Evidence from the UK, with the long campaigns in 2015 and 2017, is the subject of the first paper by a team at the University of Exeter.

The next two papers focus on President Trump's use of Twitter. One paper focuses on domestic policy and immigration in particular, with content analysis of tweets and U.S. media reporting on immigration. Another paper focuses on foreign policy and analyzes President Trump's foreign tweets, more than 700 in his first two years, and how they are received, with content analysis of leading foreign language news media.

A final paper provides fresh evidence of the uses and misuses of social media by publics, parties and political elites in Indonesia's elections in spring 2019.

Taken together these papers will provide a fresh basis for discussion on comparative political communication research in the digital era.

The last paper on Indonesia in this panel has two authors but the second one is not in the system at the time of submission, and she will present the paper: Annisa Ridzkynoor Beta (annisa.beta@nus.edu.sg), National University of Singapore
