Populism is a major topic in any conversation about European politics and analysts often point to the recent Italian coalition between the Five Star Movement and the Lega as evidence of political transformations underway. What this ignores is that Italy has been experiencing successive waves of populism at least since the early 1990s. There is not much that is new to the phenomenon. In that sense, the Italian style of populism is not such much an indicator of what European politics is experiencing, as where it may be headed.
