The Politics of New Pride Events

• In Event: Pride and Prejudice: Global Perspectives on LGBT+ Visibility and Tolerance

Abstract

LGBTQ Pride celebrations began 50 years ago, in the wake of the Stonewall Riots. Initially held in New York City and other major metropolitan areas, LGBT Pride events have grown world-wide. New Pride Events continue to grow in more and more communities. In this project, I plan to conduct interviews with organizers of newer pride celebrations to determine what prompted them to start these events, how they conceptualize the politics of pride as it relates to these events, and the changes and future of Pride as a political event after the many victories of the LGBTQ community.
