Session Submission Type: Author meet critics
Despite the enthusiasm for comparative work, the study of American health politics is highly dependent on U.S.-based researchers. The exclusion of other researchers can result in intellectual blind spots. For the first time in recent memory, this Author-Meets-Critics panel brings a foreign-language political analysis of the U.S. health system to APSA. Élisa Chelle’s new book, Comprendre la politique de santé aux États-Unis [Understanding U.S. Health Policy, Presses de l’EHESP, 2019] offers a fresh take on the intractable problems of American medicine, with special attention to their most recent manifestations under the 2010 reforms. She also examines the implications for health systems abroad, particularly in France. Scholars with extensive knowledge of French and American health policy -- Michael Gusmano, Victor Rodwin, and Sarah Rozenblum -- will introduce the book to American audiences, and discuss its significance. Together, the panelists aim to identify some of the blind spots produced by academic exclusion, and identify a way forward for redressing them.
