The Politics of Green Industrial Policy: Lessons for a Green New Deal

Wed, September 9, 2:00 to 3:30pm MDT (2:00 to 3:30pm MDT), TBA

Session Submission Type: Full Paper Panel

Session Description

The idea of a Green New Deal is re-energizing the public debate on climate policy in the United States. Yet green innovation and industrial policies—the policy core of the Green New Deal—have been implemented in various parts of the world over the last decade and a half. Europe, China, and the United States have been experimenting with green industrial policy in renewable energy, batteries, and electric vehicles. As the state has come to play a greater role in transforming various industrial sectors than early visions of market-based climate policy anticipated, it has also faced increasing pushback from vested interests. The panel gathers papers that examine the politics and institutions of green industrial policy from the subnational to the international level. The papers and the broader composition of the panel aim to bridge research on environment and energy policy on the one hand and on economic development on the other to reflect the shift of climate policy into the center of economic policy-making. Each presentation will draw out policy implications for a Green New Deal in the United States and globally to facilitate a lively debate with the audience.
