Session Submission Type: Full Paper Panel
Islamist parties today face very specific geopolitical circumstances. In some countries where Islamists formerly competed in (and won) elections, renewed state repression has completely closed off electoral politics. In other countries, victorious Islamist parties have transformed into post-ideological authoritarians. In others, victorious Islamist parties have, through their cooperation with secular parties, transformed ideologically far beyond the traditional scope of Islamist ideology. This panel explores the present crisis of political Islam from both empirical and ideological perspectives.
