Session Submission Type: Author meet critics
This panel is an authors-meet-critics discussion of Ismail White and Chryl Laird’s book, Steadfast Democrats, by Princeton University Press. The book investigates African American party identification using a multi-method approach including lab-in-the-field experiments. It argues for the importance of social conformity in explaining continuing Democratic identification despite significant ideological and class heterogeneity. It substantially revises classic studies of party identification and race such as Dawson’s *Behind the Mule*.
