Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Editing shapes disciplines, and interdisciplinary work. The practices and challenges of editing deserve more public discussion. This panel will bring together editors and recent past editors of APSR, Politics, Groups and Identities, Law and Society Review, and other journals to discuss the craft and context of editing. (We are in the process of recruiting participants.)
The context of editing shapes the work. Submissions at many journals have increased. So have critiques of the knowledge that journals exclude. Editors contribute to crafting fields by choosing, often between good papers, and guiding revisions. Editing relies on thoughtful reviewing and time editors can invest when the link between doing that work and recognizing it in universities is tenuous at best. Pressures to publish often, in teams, with dramatic findings, can contribute to the problems raised in discussions of research integrity. Controversies over access to data, research integrity and journals' role in the profession can play out on social media.
Editors will discuss navigating the process for people who submit, in addition to reflecting on context.
