What roles do presidents and candidates for office play in the electoral process? Haglund evaluates candidate quality in presidential primaries. Analyzing a new dataset of candidates for major party nominations from 1948 to 2020, Haglund highlights how the institutional and technological changes have influenced the number and type of candidates competing for the major party nominations. Adler and Azari assess the extent to which vice presidential candidate selection affects political parties. Focusing on select vice presidential candidates from 1984 to 2016, Adler and Azari examine whether the running mate choice reflects changing dynamics within a party, results in changes to a party internally, and/or reflects distinct patterns or priorities of a party as it adapts to changing electoral dynamics. Hart seeks to unpack and to explain how Trump lost and how Biden won the 2020 presidential election. Using quantitative content analysis of campaign rhetoric, Hart finds that whereas Trump’s rhetoric during the 2020 election made excessive use of what Richard Hofstadter calls the paranoid style and frequent claims of various conspiracy theories, Biden stressed commonality-the need for shared purpose during a dangerous and dispiriting time-and focused on building connections directly with voters. Andrade examines Trump’s contentious relationship with the media and use of Twitter. Analyzing all of Trump’s tweets since inauguration, Andrade assesses how frequently Trump discussed the media on Twitter, how he spoke about the media and what specific media outlets gain most of his attention.
