Extant work on violent organizations suggests that they employ violence not only to achieve policy change, but to survive as an organization. They may be directly fighting off challengers or competing for local or external supporters. Studies of the link between tactics and organizational survival have tended to ignore alternative tactics, though the recent focus on the role of governance behaviors has broadened this line of inquiry. The article explores tactics and organizational survival in a diverse set of contexts using data on both violent and nonviolent tactics. We present an updated Strategies of Resistance dataset, extending the original coding of a number of violent and nonviolent tactics to 2020.
