Abstract

Public opinion on gender norms is an important topic in countries around the world. Attitudes towards women working outside the home, for example, have been shown to be influenced by both societal and religious norms. This paper furthers research in gender studies by examining the stigma against women (versus men) working outside the home. The data used for this project are from a nationally representative survey conducted in 2023 in Trinidad and Tobago as part of LAPOP's AmericasBarometer. The dependent variable is a question that asked individuals to indicate the extent to which they agree or disagree that children are negatively affected when women work outside the home. Though there seems to be a strong correlation between the gender of respondents and support for women working outside the home, other variables such as socioeconomic status and age also have a strong impact on this variable as well. This project offers new insights into gender and public opinion with a spotlight on a lesser-studied country.
