Session Description

This is an author-meets-critic panel for Macartan Humphreys (Columbia University/WZB) and Alan Jacobs (University of British Columbia) and their new book Integrated Inferences (2023).

Humphreys and Jacobs offer an exciting, innovative approach to integrating traditionally quantitative and qualitative approaches to social science to exploit both within-case information and cross-case variation to address both population- and case-level questions. They broaden our toolkit for causal inference beyond design-based approaches, building their method on a foundation of causal models.

The panel will bring together a diverse group of leading scholars working in a wide range of methodologies -- from process-tracing in qualitative case studies to formal theoretic approaches and causal inference in a quantitative approach. Panelists include: Andrew Bennett (Georgetown University), Erin Hartman (UC Berkeley), Nahomi Ichino (Emory University), and Ken Scheve (Yale University).
