Foreign Policy Attitudes and Engagement in a Diverse Society

Thu, August 31, 2:00 to 3:30pm PDT (2:00 to 3:30pm PDT), Virtual, Virtual 20

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Session Description

Recent years have seen a growing recognition of the importance of race, gender, and other identity categories in political science research. At the same time, the study of foreign policy at the individual level, from attitudes to political engagement, has expanded greatly with advances in the survey and experimental methodology. Yet thus far, in international relations, systematic investigations of the role of identity remain limited.

This roundtable, organized as part of the Foreign Policy in a Diverse Society (FPSD) project funded by the Carnegie Corporation, will bring together junior scholars studying a range of topics and employing a variety of research methods. The discussion will focus on three questions: What are the most pressing questions such research should explore? What theoretical perspectives and empirical approaches are most promising to answer these questions? Which potential pitfalls should scholars try to avoid?

The goal is an exchange of ideas and experiences that will be useful for the panelists and audience members alike. We hope to highlight a broad range of opportunities and challenges for future research on foreign policy attitudes in diverse societies and to provide a space for interested scholars to meet and start conversations.

The roundtable will be co-chaired by the FPDS Team, Alexandra Guisinger, Katja Kleinberg, and Nyron Crawford.
