Session Submission Type: Author meet critics
This authors-meet-critics panel brings together a diverse group of scholars specializing in China, Asia, and political violence to discuss “Zero Tolerance: Repression and Political Violence on China’s New Silk Road” by Philip Potter and Chen Wang, published by the Cambridge University Press in December 2022. “Zero Tolerance” explores the cycles of repression and violence that grip Xinjiang. Drawing on extensive original data, the book demonstrates that insecurities about the stability of the regime and its claim to legitimacy motivate Chinese policies. The result is harsh repression, sophisticated media control, and selective international military cooperation. The panel will also discuss ongoing and published related work by panel participants to paint a full picture of cutting-edge scholarship in this important area.
The aim of this panel is to bring diverse substantive and methodological perspectives to bear on the book, with a focus on the work of relatively junior scholars. The panel will be chaired by Jessica Chen Weiss (Cornell) and joined by critical discussions from Naima Green-Riley (Princeton), Ji Yeon Hong (Michigan), Tyler Jost (Brown), and Chuyu Liu (UvA).
