How do experiences of within-group norm violations impact the political attitudes and behaviors of group members? I argue that group norms and the adherence to these group norms are politically consequential, hypothesizing that group members who feel anxious or embarrassed by the behavior of another group member will 1) engage in a greater breadth of political behaviors in attempt to rehabilitate the image of their in-group and 2) exhibit more restrictive political attitudes on group issues and narrow their boundaries of in-group inclusion. Using Latinxs and women as cases, I leverage an original survey experiment and interviews to find support for my hypotheses.
