Since the Korean War, South Korea has depended on the United States for its defense. However, in light of North Korea's ongoing nuclear and missile development, some South Koreans have called for the development of their own nuclear weapons. As of now, South Korea is one of the few countries in the world that has the technological capabilities to develop nuclear weapons but has chosen not to do so. Despite the country's strict adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a survey conducted by the Korea Institute for National Unification revealed that nearly 60% of South Koreans support nuclear armament. A more recent survey by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs shows that more than 70% of the population supports it. The growing support for South Korea's nuclear weapons program is a complex issue with significant geopolitical implications. This research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of this critical issue.
