AI and Human Development: Perspectives from Theories of Distributive Justice

Thu, February 8, 4:30 to 6:00pm EST (4:30 to 6:00pm EST), Virtual, Virtual 14

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming integral to various aspects of human life, from policy-making to individual decision-making. This paper examines the implications of AI and human development through the lens of distributive justice, focusing on the work of John Rawls and Amartya Sen. We introduce an 'AI multiplier' to Sen's capabilities-based approach, exploring how AI can either enhance or limit human capabilities. Our findings suggest that while AI has the potential to advance human development and potentially benefit marginalized groups, it can also exacerbate economic and social inequities, potentially excluding these same groups. In this regard, we argue that policymakers should adopt a post-Senian, distributive justice framework to ensure that AI is deployed in a manner that is fair, equitable, and just.
