Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Seeking research funding and fellowships is an increasingly competitive process, and each opportunity is better suited to different stages of one's career. APSA hosts various grants, fellowships, and other research funds that support political scientists at all career stages. This session will provide a practical overview of applying for APSA research support and fellowships with program staff from across the American Political Science Association. Panelists will discuss their respective programs, the application writing and review process, the basics of what makes a good application for their program(s), processes for developing ideas for funding and budgeting, and resources that specify what to include in research proposals. With extensive experience evaluating proposals as part of the grant-making process, these program staff panelists will discuss how to develop and write a sound grant application from the perspective of a membership association in conjunction with different funders (foundations, NSF, etc.). A key focus will be on tips for good grant-writing – the specifics of what often makes for a good grant proposal and the mistakes that grant-seekers should avoid in drafting an application.
