Teaching Race and Racism in Obama Age: A 3-Way Distance Learning Course

Abstract

Beginning in 2009, three colleagues from across the country established a distance learning course examining contemporary issues related to race and racism. Utilizing modern technology, the course featured video conferencing, chat rooms, guest speakers, online resources, and other innovative techniques to connect campuses in Rhode Island, Colorado, and Georgia. Over the years, the course evolved to include aspects that expanded the horizons of students and faculty.

The focus of this paper will be the pedagogical details regarding the development, execution, and impact of this original course on undergraduate students and faculty members at each institution. The purpose of this paper is to examine the contributions derivative of such a cooperative teaching arrangement.
