About Annual Meeting
Although most sociologists presumably work “as sociologists,” not all do. I had the good fortune to write for a very interesting introductory text about sociologists in practice, many of whom are not even labeled as sociologists in their jobs (Goldman Schuyler 2011). In addition to working outside of academia as an organizational development consultant, I have worked inside of academia in an institution that does not offer any degrees in sociology, so have had to forge my professional career in organizations of non-sociologists. I have found that similar issues exist between practitioners and more traditional research scholars across the various disciplinary boundaries. By collaborating informally among such groups, we may source creative ideas that may be useful for the SPPS section.
I propose to lead a discussion among practice-oriented sociologists, hoping to attract some who are members and perhaps leaders in parts of such other large professional or scholarly organizations, so we can brainstorm ways of supporting one another and feeling part of a larger community than we even know.
