Exclusive Relationships within the Context of Hookup Culture

Abstract

American College students’ views of exclusive relationships are examined in light of the existent hookup culture popular on college campuses. Students indicate participation in both hooking up and relationships, and relate that hooking up is indeed a common way to establish relationships. Their very specific views of relationships and hooking up not only demonstrate the distinction between the two, but also illuminate some of the reasons why they may choose hooking up over relationships during college. Embedded within these views is a sexual double standard, which is based on some foundational beliefs regarding gender.
