Rarely the Twain Shall Meet: Civil Resistance and Social Movement Studies

Sat, August 16, 8:30 to 9:30am, TBA

Abstract

This paper in progress introduces the reader to civil resistance, or nonviolent action. Besides describing its subject, the paper also provides a brief overview of the civil resistance literature and its connections to the broader field of social movement studies. Its main objective is to explore potential ground for cross-fertilization between the two fields. It is concluded that the civil resistance literature's focus on strategy can be usefully combined with the more structural approach taken by social movement scholars for mutually beneficial gains.
