Gender Differences in Faculty Research Networks Within and Outside a University

Sat, August 16, 4:30 to 5:30pm, TBA

Abstract

Using data from the Faculty Network and Workload Study (FNWS), we assess gender differences in the number of research collaborators across three sources: 1) inside a faculty member’s department, 2) outside a faculty member’s department but within their university, and 3) external to the university. We find that, overall, men have more collaborators than women, but this greater number stems from men having more collaborators with their academic department than women. Women and men have the same number of collaborators outside of their university and outside of their department but within their university. We further find that women are less satisfied with their opportunities to collaborate with other faculty within their department than men.
