The Reception of Merton's Work

Abstract

We shall first consider Merton’s reception on the part of major representatives of contemporary sociological theory, such as Giddens, Bourdieu, Elster and Boudon. Other qualified interpreters who, too, have focused on Merton’s notion of social structure will be also considered. Some exegetical contributions, which deal with other objects of Merton’s work such as organizations, anomie, relative deprivation, and the sociology of knowledge and of science in particular, will be then dealt with.
