Teaching Social Problems as a Service-Learning Course

Mon, August 18, 4:30 to 6:10pm, TBA

Abstract

Service-learning implements a community engagement approach to learning course objectives. Students are provided with the opportunity to select a community partner organization where they have the chance to gain hands on experience. They also have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, in addition to traditional classroom activities. This paper explores my experience teaching Social Problems as a ‘Service-Learning Class’ designated course. I will discuss lessons learned and also strategies that have been effective. I use student feedback, participant observation, and service learning literature to discuss best practices and lessons learned.
