Nuclear energy is an important issue in France. The civil nuclear program was designed to provide France with energy independence; granting nuclear companies a strong stranglehold on France’s economy. Thus, despite construction and maintenance issues regarding the power plants and international nuclear catastrophes, the French anti-nuclear movement struggles to efficiently construct its response to the powerful pro-nuclear lobby and, at the same time, to address the dangerous nature of nuclear energy. In particular, the media coverage of the debate reflects the unbalance between pro-nuclear advocates and anti-nuclear activists. This paper uses binary logistic regression models to explore the coverage of the debate in two of the main French newspapers, Le Monde and Le Figaro. The study draws on the concepts of media framing and resonance to show how social movements’ themes and deployers are considered in mainstream media outlets.
