Race, Supervisorial Change, and Job Outcomes: The Case of NCAA Division I College Basketball

Sat, August 16, 4:30 to 5:30pm, TBA

Abstract

We examine whether race affects the employment status of subordinates following a job change by their immediate supervisor. We specifically test whether homophily affects the odds of being internally promoted, staying in the current position, or following the supervisor to a new position compared to losing one’s job. Data for this analysis come from a unique dataset that explores what happens to NCAA Division I college basketball assistant coaches following a head coaching job change. Multinomial logistic regression results confirm that racial homophily positively affects the odds of internal promotions and of staying at one’s employing institution for white coaches. These results underscore how racial processes continue to disadvantage minorities and perpetuate social inequality along racial lines.
