Off to a Low Start: Gendered Experiences and Gender Differences in Salary Expectations and Offers

Mon, August 18, 10:30am to 12:10pm, TBA

Abstract

Persistant wage gaps are often explained by either demand or supply side explanations, that either blame employers in discrimination or employees of minority groups in lacking productivity or presentation of self. Exploiting HR data of a global firm we examine the process of wage setting for new applicants, cutting through simplistic supply or demand side explanations to argue that both the meaning and consequence of minority status is determined in interaction.
