Anti-Fracking Mobilization in New York and Pennsylvania: A Comparison of Organizational Fields

Sun, August 17, 12:30 to 1:30pm, TBA

Abstract

This paper examines anti-fracking mobilization within New York and Pennsylvania through a comparison of social movement organizational (SMO) fields. It considers what role, if any, the environmental movement played in shaping the initial policy divergence between New York and Pennsylvania. Specifically, I examine how anti-fracking mobilization may have played a role in the institution and maintenance of a moratorium in New York State. This preliminary analysis focuses on the founding, structure, and goals of SMOs mobilizing against “fracking” in each state.
