1920's Etiquette Books and the Production of Culture

Mon, August 18, 8:30 to 10:10am, TBA

Abstract

Etiquette books have long been studied as a cultural product, but little has been written on their production. Using the period of the 1920s as a case study, I explore the ways in which the mechanism of the literary culture industry--advertising, marketing techniques, and critic reviews--combined with the efforts of authors and feedback from audiences to transform the form, style, and content of etiquette texts.
