171 - Thematic Session. Children's Work and Children's Play during Hard Times

Sun, August 17, 8:30 to 10:10am, TBA

Session Submission Type: Invited Session

Abstract

This panel is composed of sociologists and other social scientists who are engaged in research focused broadly on the nexus between the changing economy and parent-child relationships. The expert panelists conduct their research using a variety of methodologies and in various contexts: from the perspective of families as consumers, to those of the children of immigrants who often perform significant work in their families, to parent and children’s investments in competitive play, to disability insurance and to lives of youth transitioning into adulthood. This panel contributes to the fields of economic sociology, family and childhood studies by placing children’s activities at the center stage of the discussion of how families negotiate Hard Times.
