210 - Presidential Panel. Young Ethnographers: Portraits of Individuals Negotiating with Institutions

Abstract

Traditionally, many of the best ethnographies are done by young scholars. This presidential panel highlights the work of junior scholars who have used participant-observation in their research. All of the studies highlight the ways in which individuals (of varying class and racial backgrounds) interact with people in positions of power in institutions: medical offices, schools, labor market, and the police. These fascinating studies reveal the power, and limits, of institutions in shaping life chances.
