Session Submission Type: Paper Session
A detailed study by an American Sociological Association Task Force, Liberal Learning and the Sociology Major Updated, provides guidelines for institutions seeking to build, evaluate, and improve Sociology programs. These guidelines recommend moving away from a “Ferris wheel” model, whereby students at any level get a “ticket” to ride by completing an introductory course, after which they hop on and enroll in any Sociology course. While the latter practice maximized enrollments, it worked against students acquiring a depth of knowledge in the major. The proposed session will invite teaching and learning experts who will address the topic of mapping the sociology curriculum almost a decade after the task force published its report.
