503 - Section on Community and Urban Sociology Invited Session. Community Based Research: A Key to the Equitable Development of US Cities

Abstract

Inequality, long a subject of urban research, has become a focus of wide-ranging policy debates. A growing number of scholars are collaborating with community organizations on research and policy initiatives that address various trajectories of inequality in efforts to create more equitable and sustainable cities and metropolitan regions. This session will bring together academic researchers and their community partners who are engaged in these efforts in the San Francisco Bay area. One team will examine domestic violence and the other will explore mental health issues in the American Indian community. URBAN (the Urban Research Based Action Network) is a national, interdisciplinary of scholars who are engaged in collaborative research to advance equity and social justice. Three members of the Sociology Planning Group of URBAN will discuss these particular partnerships and other objectives and initiatives of the network.
