There is much discussion in scholarly circles and the popular press of whether the growing geopolitical rivalry between China and the United States might lead to overt conflict. It is the purpose of this session to directly addresses this question from the perspective of world-system theory which argues that the condition of a declining global hegemon and a rising challenger often result in overt conflict. Might such conflict appear sometime in the 21st century?
