Although people undoubtedly draw on prevailing cultural schemata while sorting themselves and others into racial and ethnic categories, there is fluidity in the process that deserves attention. The study of this process raises thorny methodological questions such as how do we effectively analyze processes that are often difficult to observe and happen quickly? This session will showcase empirical research on racial and ethnic identification and categorization on the micro, everyday scale.
