It is common for sociologists to examine the formulation of rights-claims by social movements and/or the role of NGOs and UN agencies in echoing such claims. This panel explores the complex relations between rights-claims (whether advanced at the local or the global level) and social policy (implemented at the level of the nation-state). How do rights-claims influence social policy? The panel examines the translation process through which rights-claims find expression in social policy.
