Session Submission Type: Paper Session
This session extends prior work on categories and classification schemes in markets in two directions. It considers the determinants of categorical schemes, like CEO comparator or peer group categories, which have been used to justify skyrocketing compensations. And it develops new understandings of how categories are used in and shape markets to understand how firms or products can span categories without penalties, revising foundational “categorical imperative” assumptions that positive evaluations require simple conformity to uniform categories.
