Social Support Patterns and Their Determinants in Contemporary Korean Society

Abstract

Social support is a key resource in various dimensions that exists in social relationship with others. Owing to its positive effects on welfare, mental health, and psychological well-being, scholarly attention has increased since 1990s in Korea. However, existing studies on perceived social support using a nationwide dataset, the 2004 Korean General Social Survey (KGSS) adopting the social relations and support systems module in the 2001 ISSP, do not adequately consider that the contents of social support are influenced by multi-level factors such as socio-demographic, social psychological, dyadic relational, and network attributes. The current paper is the first work that seeks to examine multiple determinants of emotional and instrumental support with the most recent data available from the 2012 KGSS(Korean General Social Survey). Analyzing binary logistic regression models of received support from non-kin primary groups against kin and of isolation from support networks, we summarize our main findings and then discuss practical implications.
