2. College Sex and Relationships in the Hookup Era

Mon, August 24, 2:30 to 4:10pm, TBA

Abstract

This poster, created by NYU students and ASA President Paula England, summarizes a range of findings from the Online College Social Life Survey (OCSLS) led by Paula England. This survey collected data from over 20,000 students at more than 20 colleges and universities between 2005 and 2011. We are excited that ASA has opted for more high-tech LCD displays for the session and will plan our materials accordingly—so that slides will automatically advance at a crowd-tested pace, and graphics will be presented with relevant explanations on the same slides. The findings we will present in this poster will focus on: 1) A descriptive portrait of the sexual scene at college--typical number of dates, hookups, definition of a hookup, what happens sexually on hookups, proportion of students in a relationship of 6 months etc.; 2) Ways that sexual behaviors and relationships are gendered; 3) Health risk behaviors related to condom use, and overlapping partners; and 4) Trends in sexual assault. A statement about where the data are available for download will also be included in the poster.
