Sociology of the Good

Abstract

The basic goals of sociology are to develop knowledge and understanding and to contribute to the general social welfare. A sociology that focuses on the positive, or good, is the most viable means to further these goals. Pitirim A. Sorokin's integral sociology provides a framework for developing a sociology of the good. Integralism incorporates ideas, propositions, and concepts from philosophy and the world religious traditions within the sociological frame of reference. This paper considers how Sorokin's integralism can contribute to a sociology of the good within the subject matter of the field of altruism, morality, and social solidarity.
