Creating Modern Slavery: Linking the Sociolgical to the Legal

Abstract

Until recently, modern slavery has suffered from a fundamental defect. It lacked an agreed to definition.
The coming together of leading scholars including Sociologist Kevin Bales and Orlando Patterson have help develop the 2012 Bellagio-Harvard Guidelines which break that impasse by developing an understanding of the internationally recognized definition of slavery which captures the lived experience of a person found in a contemporary condition of slavery.
Consideration will be given to that process and the manner in which the principals can to understand the relevance of inter-disciplinarity.
