About Annual Meeting
Using semi structured interviews, and focus groups of college males, this article examines the link between expectations of masculinity and sexual behavior. Throughout the young men's discussions of why they choose to engage in sex, with whom, and what behaviors they choose, the peer group emerges as the most significant factor. Peers set standards for acceptable partners, and also encourage sexual behavior in line with hegemonic masculinity. However, the peer group expectations merge with traditional gender role expectations to encourage young men to engage in sex, even at time when they do not wish to. Therefore, the peer group can supersede individual desire in encouraging young men to have sex.
