About Annual Meeting
This paper explores the current state of slavery in the world, with an eye toward its past and what we can learn from the past to inform the present. The research presented is novel and informs the Global Slavery Index, a new tool that measures contemporary slavery along with its vulnerability factors across the globe. This paper ties current knowledge on contemporary slavery with insights from the historic slave trade in the American South. Linkages between past and present will be explored in depth with discussion of policy recommendations to mitigate and, hopefully one day eradicate, contemporary slavery.
