About Annual Meeting
Mexico is the primary transit country for Central and South Americans immigrating to the United States. Migration push factors, such as violence, economic and political instability, and natural disasters, have lead Hondurans, Guatemalans, and Salvadorians to migrate through Mexico to the United States seeking security and better life opportunities. Central American transmigrants face a multitude of risks as they migrate north including migration-related hazards and risks associated with their transitory status. Due to limited data, the mental health consequences of transmigration are largely unknown. Using recently data collected in migrant shelters in northern Mexico, we estimate the prevalence of mental illnesses and substance abuse among a sample of migrants currently in transit to the United States. This research provides much needed evidence as to the mental health consequences of transit migration.
