Abstract

The developmental state literature largely overlook the role of nationalist sentiment in the course of industrialization in the Third World country by focusing only on postwar, state-led industrial development. This paper describes how nationalist discourses and sentiments permeate the various stages of tobacco and textile industries in the 1920s and 1930s and seeks to explore the intricate relationships between nationalism and early industrialization in China.
