Extending Queer Theory: Multiadic Discourses of Purity Pledges in Families

Abstract

Queer theory is seldom used to critique heterosexuality. To explore queer theory as a tool for examining paradoxes of heterosexuality, data from multiadic interviews with 13 families who enacted purity pledge processes is explored. Thematic analysis, values coding, and emotion coding reveal four salient themes in the joint family discourses: parents should want the best for their children; sex is terrifying; sex is a beautiful gift; and girls have no sexual agency. Additionally, the results indicate that multiple forms of heterosexuality are at play, including one that could be marked as queer. Discussion about extending queer theory is offered.
