18. Understanding Food Access among Rural Americans

Abstract

Many rural Americans face significant challenges to accessing healthy foods. Rates of food insecurity are highest in non-metropolitan areas, and the consolidation of large grocers has meant the creation of food deserts. Despite these issues, research on food access is often limited to urban areas. This session seeks to broaden the discussion to include the unique challenges and barriers in these places, and gain a better understanding of how race, gender, and sexualities limit access in rural areas.
